Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
The rise of digital media has brought significant benefits to society, but it has also led to the spread of misinformation and fake news. This is especially problematic in politically sensitive times, during elections, or when public health crises arise. In Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, the rapid spread of fake news through social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter has posed significant challenges to the public’s ability to make informed decisions.
